Lawmakers Urge FDA to Label GMOs

Lawmakers are urging the Food and Drug Administration to take make it a requirement that genetically modified foods be labeled.

Fifty-five Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, endorsing the approach of various food labeling advocates, environmentalists and organic food producers who are petitioning the current hands-off policy toward informing the public of GMOs, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

In 1992, the FDA decided not to label genetically modified food, saying that a food product did not need a label if it smelled looked and tasted similar to non-modified foods. Later FDA rulings, such as one dealing with irradiated food, became stricter on the subject and called for more disclosure of the food products.
