A South Carolina jury has awarded $2.4 million to a man whose wife died of complications after a gynecological surgery.

According to the Independent Mail, Rita Blair died, on November 12, 2007, about three weeks after her surgery was performed at the Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital by Dr. John M. Warren.

The medical malpractice lawsuit claimed that Dr. Warren perforated Rita’s bowel during surgery and delayed treating the problem, which led to her death.

Every year, 98,000 people die from medical error, often due to mistakes that occur during surgery, according to the American Medical Association.
