Mesothelioma-Causing Asbestos Regulated by DOE

The Department of Energy (DOE) has enacted new rules that are meant specifically to protect construction workers from developing diseases such as mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure at demolition sites.

The Mid-Columbia Tri-City Herald recently reported that DOE regulators recently agreed to restrict the use of worker-operated heavy equipment during demolition projects that involve buildings with asbestos products in them. The primary reason for the new rules is to protect the health and safety of construction workers who are on the job by limiting their exposure to asbestos products.

Months ago, an early-warning report was issued by the Environmental Protection Agency’s inspector general about the potentially dangerous asbestos removal projects being undertaken in Hanford, WA. Prior to the warning, many workers had been performing asbestos abatement projects either by hand or by using heavy equipment.

Since the warning, Hanford contractors have not demolished any buildings that contain asbestos.
