Nassau Coliseum Investigated for Mesothelioma Risk by OSHA

A New York City-area stadium that houses an NHL franchise and hosts a number of public events is under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after concerns that asbestos in the building is causing buildingemployees to develop mesothelioma.

Federal investigators from OSHA opened an investigation regarding the ‘violation of workplace health and safety standards” due to possible asbestos exposure that workers at the Nassau VeteransMemorial Coliseum in Long Island, NY have been experiencing for years. The investigation was spurred by the complaints of about a dozen Coliseum workers who allegedly provided photos of a white asbestos-like substance in the building’s boiler room, NBC New York reported.

Testing of the white substance confirmed that there were potentially dangerous levels of asbestos in the arena. The workers added that two of their former workers have developed mesothelioma.

In addition to hosting family events such as Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, Nassau Coliseum is also home to the NHL’s New York Islanders. Team Senior Vice President Michael Picker told NBC that the asbestos claims would be properly investigated.

"The Islanders expect that the building owner, Nassau county and the building facility manager, SMG, will review the allegations and take any and all appropriate action. The safety of our fans, players and employees is paramount," he said.
