New Fracking Rules Demanded by Environmentalists

The National Resources Defense Council and other environmentalists are urging the U.S Department of the Interior to make certain that new rules for fracking protect both public health and the environment.

The environmental groups contend that regulation for hydraulic fracturing has not been updated to take into account the rapid development of the technology used in oil and gas production. They note that the current rules in place were written in 1982, according to Law360 (subscription required).

They wrote a letter to the director of the DOI’s Bureau of Land Management and included a recommendation to require all drillers to disclose all chemicals used in fracking. The letter was signed by the heads of 61 national, state, and regional environmental groups from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Ohio, among other states.
