Rite Aid Questioned by Senators Over “Wellness Ambassadors”

Two U.S. senators wrote a letter to Rite Aid’s CEO that questions the “potentially deceptive marketing practices” behind a number of dietary supplements.

According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sens. Richard Durbin (D-IL), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) asked the company to explain reports that its “wellness ambassadors” recommended dietary supplements to consumers looking for medical professional advice for health conditions. The senators are concerned that the “ambassadors” may be mistaken as pharmacists by some customers because they wear white coats and are usually located near the pharmacy.

"This potential for confusion could result in dramatic and dangerous consequences for consumers," stated the letter.

The senators asked Rite Aid in the letter to provide data how the wellness ambassadors are trained, and also requested that the stores disclose the steps it takes to avoid confusion among customers.
