Shark Cartilage Supplements Linked to Diseases

Report this content

Shark cartilage has been promoted by many as a joint health supplement and acancer preventative, but a new study is showing that it may contain a neurotoxin that has been linked to Lou Gehrig’s disease and Alzheimer’s

According to the New York Times, scientists as the University of Miami examined shark cartilage samples from seven different species of shark. They found that all the samples contained high amounts of the compound beta-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), which has been associated to the development of neurodegenerative diseases

This study further adds to rising concerns over the shark cartilage supplements as they are highly sought after as a remedy for bone and joint problems as well as a cancer fighter.
