Synthetic Pot Side Effects Missed by ER Doctors

The growing popularity of synthetic marijuana known by the slang terms “K2” or “spice” among teens may be the cause of serious side effects that are sending them to emergency rooms and confusing doctors, according to a new report.

Researchers at the Children’s National Medical Center examined three cases of adolescents who were admitted into the emergency room and suspected of using synthetic pot. They found that in each case, the teens showed side effects such as agitation, inability to speak, increased sweating, and hallucinations.

MSNBC reports that because synthetic pot products can vary and may contain different levels of different chemicals and substances, there is no way to find out which ingredients could have caused certain side effects.

In 2001, poison control centers reported receiving about 7,000 calls about synthetic pot, nearly double the calls they handled one year earlier.
