The AAJ Calls for Safety Regulations for Keyless Car Ignitions

The American Association for Justice is calling for stricter federal regulators to adopt a rule requiring keyless ignition engines in automobiles to turn off after 30 minutes of being idle.

There are reports of several deaths linked to cars with keyless ignitions, mostly involving drivers who left their car engines running for long periods of time, leading to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The AAJ said an audible sound alert is not enough to protect consumers against gas leaks. They also said that vehicles with keyless ignitions pose an increased risk for carbon monoxide poisoning because they remove “the deeply ingrained habit to turn a key in order to shut down the car engine,” according to Law360 (subscription required).
