A New Mexico man was awarded $2 million by a Santa Fe jury for a botched back surgery that caused him to suffer life-changing injuries and undergo additional surgeries.

Plaintiff Matt McCann went for the surgical removal of a herniated disc at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe.  According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, a major artery and a vein were accidentally cut during the procedure by the surgeon, without realizing what happened.

A day and a half later, McCann went into cardiac arrest and the surgical error was discovered. But McCann had already suffered nerve damage affecting the bladder and bowel control, and brain damage, reported the Santa Fe New Mexican.

In addition to the $2 million compensation for McCann, Christus St. Vincent was also ordered to pay $50,000 to Stephanie Roberts who was McCann’s wife and stated that their marriage collapsed due to the changes in McCann’s personality and the traumatic impact of the surgery.
