300,000 Florida Students’ Private Records Hacked
The computers of a Florida college were hacked and confidential information of not only the employees but also that of around 300,000 students was stolen.
The Associated Press (AP) reported that the Florida Department of Education said that nearly 200,000 student records that were meant for the consideration of Florida's popular Bright Futures scholarships for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years were stolen. The data included details such as students’ names, social security numbers, birthdays, ethnicity, and gender information. This information is quite likely to be misused by the hackers to acquire loans from the banks and to commit identity theft.
In addition, 3,000 employee records were also stolen containing financial information as well as direct deposit account numbers. Around 76,000 records containing personal information of current and past students was also hacked, reported the AP.
