9/11 Cancer Patients May Finally Receive Compensation

9/11 victims who developed cancer following the terrorist attacks may finally be compensated for cancer treatments they have received in the years since the attack.

According to Discovery News, more than 50 types of cancer have been added to a coverage list for those people affected by the World Trade Center collapse. A $4.3 billion fund is available for those health victims.

Cancer patients had been unable to claim any compensation until now. Some people were able to receive aid for respiratory disease. The decision to allow additional diseases for funding, handed down by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, had previously been delayed. Officials said this was because of a lack of evidence linking the collapse with cancer.

A study of firefighters helped persuade the government to include cancers. About 400 residents and rescue workers have died from cancer since 9/11, according to the New York Post.

The September 11 attacks were a series of four coordinated aircraft-jacking attacks upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. areas on September 11, 2001.
