Abbott Labs Sued Over Humira

An Illinois resident filed a dangerous drug lawsuit against Abbott Laboratories alleging its arthritis drug, Humira, caused her to develop cancer.

The dangerous drug lawsuit claims that plaintiff Carolyn Shaw “was prescribed Humira and received bi-monthly injections of the drug from October 2008 to August 2010 when she was diagnosed with B-cell non-Hodgkin’s follicular lymphoma,” according to Courthouse News.

The complaint further says that she underwent surgery and chemotherapy treatment, and her cancer went into remission, but she will have to have treatments every five months for the remainder of her life to ensure the cancer does not return.

Shaw’s complaint says that it was not until a year after she began taking Humira that Abbott put a black box warning on the drug’s label alerting patients and physicians to cases of leukemia, a  cancer of the blood or bone marrow, in adults, adolescents, and children, according to Courthouse News. The complaint further says that Abbott withheld important information that would have enabled an informed decision about whether to take the drug and that neither Shaw nor her doctors were warned about the lymphoma risk when she started to take it.
