A New Jersey jury awarded $18 million to two former users of Roche Holding AG’s Accutane acne drug who claimed the treatment caused them to develop bowel disease.

Plaintiffs Kathleen Rossitto and Riley Wilkonson claimed that Roche failed to warn patients that Accutane could cause inflammatory bowel disease. They were each awarded $9 million in compensation for their injuries by the jury, according to Bloomberg News.

Prior to the verdicts, European regulators said Roche failed to evaluate reports of safety problems linked to its products to determine if they should be passed on to health officials, according to Bloomberg News.

There have been over 7,000 Accutane lawsuits filed against Roche in the past decade, and of the 13 that have gone to trial, nine resulted in favor of the plaintiff.
