The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office recently launched an investigation into the Hepatitis C outbreak that occurred at Exeter Hospital.

AG Michael Delaney said that the office is working with the local and state police to “determine what, if any, criminal laws have been violated in regard to the outbreak,” according to Law360 (subscription required).

Meanwhile, a class action medical malpractice lawsuit was filed against the hospital that claims it put more than a thousand patients at risk for contracting Hepatitis C. The suit alleges that a hospital employee at the catheterization lab is responsible for the outbreak, writes Law360. It seeks damages both for those infected with the disease and those who suffered emotionally from the risk of having the disease.

Hepatitis C is a potentially fatal liver disease that is often spread through blood exposure.

The hospital has contacted 1,195 patients who were treated at the cardiac catheterization lab between October 2010 and May 25, 2012, to tell them that they may have contracted the disease and offer free testing, according to Law360.
