Age and Disability Discrimination Lands Regions Bank in Suit

Regions Financial Corp., which operates Regions Bank, faces a lawsuit for discriminating against an employee and firing her on account of her age and disability.

Business Insurance reports the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed the workplace discrimination lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, Memphis, on behalf of Margaret Hardy, a former bank manager with Regions Bank. The EEOC’s suit alleges that the bank failed to reasonably accommodate Hardy’s disability and fired her because of her age.

The 61-year-old Hardy was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, which leads to difficulty in concentrating, fatigue, and increased anxiety. In 2010 she voluntarily requested a less demanding role. The bank rejected her request and dismissed her in June 2012 after a final written warning in 2010, according to Business Insurance.

The EEOC’s suit claims that Regions Bank discharged Hardy less favorably then younger branch managers with similar cases and in so doing violated the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, reports Business Insurance.
