Another Lap Band Firm is Warned

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is cracking down on another California Lap-Band firm for allegedly using misleading advertisements to promote its weight-loss surgery.

Lap-Band VIP received a letter from the agency warning of disciplinary action unless it changes its billboard and television marketing, according to the Los Angeles Times. The FDA said the company’s advertisements were deceiving because they failed to include proper warnings about the risks of Lap-Band Surgery.

The Times reports that the allegations in the warning letter echo those made by the FDA against 1-800-Get-THIN and its ad campaigns touting the gastric device, which is implanted around the stomach to help patients lose weight.

The California Department of Insurance conducted an investigation earlier this year of Lap-Band centers in the Los-Angeles area associated with the 1-800-Get-Thin ad campaigns after they were hit with litigation over allegations ranging from consumer fraud to wrongful death.
