Antidepressant Use During Pregnancy Linked to Hypertension

Report this content

The use of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants during pregnancy may increase women’s risk of hypertension, suggests a new study.

According Medical News Today, the research shows that out of 1,216 women taking SSRIs, their risk of high blood pressure increased by about 60 percent compared to women not taking the drugs. The linked the drug Paxil (paroxetine) to an even higher increased risk of 81 percent.

This is an important issue because antidepressants are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs during pregnancy.

Certain types of antidepressants caused women to deliver infants withbirth defects, which resulted in a number of dangerous drug lawsuitsagainst major drug companies.
