A new study suggests that women who take antipsychotic drugs during pregnancy may be at a higher risk for developing diabetes and giving birth to small babies.

Researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden analyzed data from the Swedish national birth registry and found that pregnant women who took antipsychotics about doubled their risk for developing gestational diabetes when compared to those who did not take the drugs, according to MedPage Today.

The study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, also found that certain antipsychotic drugs, such as olanzapine (Zyprexa) and clozapine (Clozaril), were linked to abnormally large heads in infants, writes MedPage Today.

"Pregnant women treated with antipsychotics should be closely monitored for gestational diabetes and deviating fetal growth," researchers concluded.
