Apple Sued Over Mobile Tracking

Apple faces a consumer fraud lawsuit claiming it allowed advertisers to discretely track the activity of millions of people using the company’s mobile devices, such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ruled that the consumers who filed the complaint may sue Apple under two California consumer protection laws but can no longer pursue claims that the company violated their privacy rights, according to Reuters. However, Google and other defendants were dismissed from the suit.

The consumer fraud lawsuit stems from an April 2011 presentation by two computer programmers who showed that Apple tracked the movements of iPhone users. The plaintiffs claim that Apple designed its products to allow mobile analytics and advertising companies to collect personal information when a user downloaded free applications, including those from the company’s website.
