Asbestos Exposure Linked to Higher Risk of Non-Lung Cancers

Australian researchers have claimed that exposure to blue asbestos in children may lead to serious health problems in adulthood that are not just limited to mesothelioma and lung cancer.

The study, which was published in American Journal of Industrial Medicine reports that children exposed to blue asbestos faced a higher risk of developing a number of cancers and heart disease as adults. The research studied data on children who resided in Wittenoom where blue asbestos was mined for almost 20 years.

Women who were raised in Wittenoom were found to be 70 to 103 times more likely to develop mesothelioma than women raised elsewhere. Their risk of brain and ovarian cancer also increased significantly.

Men raised in the area showed increased risk of brain, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and leukemia, but the risk of mesothelioma was lower than it was found to be in women, reports ABC Science.

The data collected indicates that the asbestos exposure may lead to a slightly higher incidence of nervous disorders and heart disease, which is a relatively new finding.
