Asbestos Found in Florida School

Asbestos continues to be found in schools across the country on a regular basis, the latest one being in Bradenton, FL at a school that is slated to be demolished.

Following a study that took place earlier this year, school officials recently announced that a track-and-field storage building located at Manatee High School contains asbestos products in its interior walls. The building is thought to be at least 40-years-old, meaning that it was built during a time when asbestos products were still predominantly used in most construction projects.

"As long as it's in a contained state, as long as it's not disturbed, it is not a problem," said Todd Henson, the district director of maintenance and operations, according to the Herald Tribune. Officials echoed that the building posed no risk to students.

While the school is slated to be demolished, removing the asbestos properly beforehand is extremely important in order to prevent the dangerous fibers from becoming airborne and inhalable to those nearby. The school district is planning a $3,000 asbestos abatement project to remove all the asbestos before the school’s demolition takes place.
