Asbestos Linked to Mesothelioma and Other Illnesses

Researchers have claimed that blue asbestos exposure in children may lead to serious health problems in adulthood that are not just limited to mesothelioma and lung cancer.

The study, which was published in American Journal of Industrial Medicine, found that children exposed to blue asbestos in the Australian town of Wittenoom faced a higher risk of developing a number of cancers and heart disease as adults. The research studied data on children who grew up in the town -  where blue asbestos was mined for almost 20 years.

Women who were raised in Wittenoom were found to be 70 to 103 times more likely to develop mesothelioma than women raised elsewhere, ABC Science reported. Their risk of brain and ovarian cancer also increased significantly.

While men showed increased risk of brain, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and leukemia, their risk of mesothelioma was lower than it was found to be in women.
