Bayer Calcium Supplement Claims May be Misleading

Bayer HealthCare AG should stop promoting claims that one daily dose of its calcium supplement provides the same amount of calcium as competing products that require two daily doses because such claims are misleading, according to the Better Business Bureau’s National Advertising Division (NAD).

The NAD said that the company cannot make this claim about its Citracal Slow Release 1200 because it did not use reliable or adequate evidence to prove it. Bayer claims that its product provides consumers with 1200 milligrams of calcium in just one daily dose, compared to competing products that require two daily doses of 600 milligrams, according to the NAD press release.

NAD recommended that Bayer stop using phrases such as “new breakthrough for unsurpassed absorption,” “efficient calcium absorption in just one daily dose” or “you only have to take it once per day for your full daily dose”.

The NAD conducted its probe into Bayer’s dietary supplement after Pfizer challenged the company’s claims.
