Bayer Settles 500 Yaz Lawsuits For $110 Million

Bayer agreed to pay $110 million to settle nearly 500 Yaz lawsuits that claim its birth control pills caused blood clots.

The drugmaker will pay about $220,000 a case to resolve the claims that its Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills caused plaintiffs to experience at times fatal blood clots that can lead to strokes and heart attacks, according to Bloomberg.

The settlements come after a federal judge in Illinois delayed a January 9th trial for a dangerous drug lawsuit that claims Bayer and some of its subsidiaries misled women about the health risks of its birth control pills, so a mediator could attempt to reach a settlement.

Amidst all of the litigation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated the warning labels on the Yasmin line of birth control pills - Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella - to inform consumers of the blood clot risks.
