Birth Injury Risk Factors

Could your child’s birth injuries have been prevented if medical staff identified the risk factors?

About seven out of every 1,000 children are born with some type of birth injury, ranging from skull trauma to physical disability, cerebral palsy, and Erb's palsy that can be caused during delivery. The following risk factors lead to an increased chance of birth complications:

Large Infants

Infants that weigh at least 10 pounds are substantially more likely to impede normal passage through the birthing canal.

Feet First

A breech birth is oftentimes caused by babies that are premature. Oxygen deprivation and/or umbilical cord prolapse, among other injuries, may occur.

Excessive Time

It’s normal to take several hours for your first child, but if the baby is not coming out, something may be wrong.See additional risk factors in the graphic attached to this release.
