BP PLC is being sued in a $500 billion class action chemical exposure lawsuit by more than 43,000 Texans claiming the energy giant released millions of pounds of toxic chemicals that contaminated their air and water, causing the residents to experience health problems.

The plaintiffs allege that the air pollution resulted from a 2010 emissions event at a refinery in Texas City that caused 3.75 million pounds of chemicals—such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and benzene –to pollute their air and water for more than 40 days, according to Law360 (subscription required). BP agreed to pay $50 million to settle another complaint with the state of Texas because of the dangerous emissions from the plant, according to Law360.
