BPA Linked to Obesity and Diabetes

Report this content

Although the rising rate of obesity and diabetes in the U.S. has been blamed on unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise, a new study suggests that there may be another contributing factor to this health epidemic: Bisphenol-A(BPA).

According to the Huffington Post, Angel Nadal, a BPA expert at the Miguel Hernandez University in Spain, has published research in PLoS ONE that found BPA can trigger the release of almost double the amount of insulin needed to break down food. Because high levels of insulin levels can desensitize the body to the hormone over time, some people may develop Type-2 diabetes and gain weight.

Nadal also found that even small amounts of BPA could affect a person’s hormones. Many studies have found that BPA may interfere with human hormones.

Other side effects that have been linked to the chemical are cancer, heart disease, infertility, and cognitive problems.
