The New Jersey State Court announced that Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc. is seeking centralized management of 16 Mirena IUD lawsuits in Middlesex County.

The 16 Mirena lawsuits claim the company defectively made the intrauterine device, or IUD, and failed to properly warn consumers. They were initially filed in Morris County, N.J., where Bayer has headquarters, according to Law360 (subscription required).

Bayer’s application states, "Defendants are requesting centralized management in order to help conserve judicial resources, avoid the risks of duplicative discovery and avoid the risks of inconsistent rulings," according to Law360.

The application also said that there are seven similar cases pending in state and federal venues around the U.S.

Mirena is a hormone-releasing birth control system that’s made of soft plastic and inserted in a woman’s uterus. More than 2 million women across the country use the contraceptive device, according to Law360.
