Cerebral Palsy Affects 1 Million-Plus Chinese Children

Between 1 million and 1.2 million Chinese children have cerebral palsy, notes an article in ChinaDaily.com about an ongoing campaign to raise awareness about the condition.

Cerebral palsy is a birth injury that affects movement and learning abilities. Children with it can have difficulties ranging from mild motor problems to severe mental and physical disabilities. According to the article, nearly 70 percent of these children live in remote and poverty-stricken areas of China. Those living with cerebral palsy in remote areas have little access to treatment and rehabilitation training.

“Chinese society is becoming richer and richer,” said the secretary-general of One Foundation, an organization co-sponsoring the cerebral palsy campaign. “But a child with cerebral palsy, or a family that has a child with cerebral palsy, is drawn into an abyss of misery. We hope the country will legislate to help families and children trapped in this tragedy."

One Foundation, a philanthropy started by actor Jet Li, has joined with the Beijing Normal University’s China Philanthropy Research Institute in this awareness campaign.

One of the causes of cerebral palsy is poor or negligent medical care during the mother’s pregnancy, through the birth process, or in the crucial moments after birth. In the United States, cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood, affecting approximately one in 303 children, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Unfortunately, sometimes improper care by medical professionals can cause a child’s cerebral palsy birth injury. If you think this happened to your child, call a nurse case manager at Sokolove Law today. The nurse case manager will help you explore your options. A cerebral palsy settlement can not only provide financial compensation to help you care for your child, it can also help prevent similar cases of improper care from happening to other families.
