Chinese Drywall Bill Heads to White House

A new bill that seeks to prevent defective Chinese drywall from entering the country is now on its way to the White House.

Tainted Chinese drywall—believed to emit certain gases that can corrode metal and wreak havoc with electronics—has adversely affected thousands of homeowners across the U.S.

NBC News reports that the bill authored by U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), called the Drywall Safety Act, is also directed at making the Chinese government push manufacturers of the defective material to compensate U.S. homeowners. The bill sailed through the Senate and the House of Representatives this week.

The bill sets chemical standards for domestic and imported drywall and will help prevent toxic wallboard from entering the U.S. markets in the future. Critics, however, point out that the bill will do little to help those homeowners who have already suffered damages due to defective Chinese drywall.
