Chrysler Sued Over Dodge Wheel-Locking Defect

Chrysler Group LLC. was sued in a product liability lawsuit that claims the rear wheels lock on its Dodge Ram trucks, which may cause drivers to lose control of the vehicles and crash.

The prospective class action says the issue exists in 2009-2010 Dodge Ram trucks and is caused by a defective rear differential that locks the rear tires and causes the vehicles to spin out, according to Law360 (subscription required).

“When the rear wheels lock up as a result of the differential defect, numerous consumers have reported that they have been unable to control the class vehicles,” the complaint said.

The product liability lawsuit also alleges the defect can cause metal parts to separate from the truck, puncture its fuel tanks, and send metal debris flying towards other vehicles, according to Law360.

The suit comes on the heels of an announcement by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it had launched a preliminary evaluation into whether Dodge Rams have a differential problem that could cause a loss in vehicle control, according to Law360. The agency said that as many as 230,000 pick-up trucks might be affected.
