Consumer Fraud Lawsuit Leads to $1.7M Award in MA

Life Insurance of North America will pay more than $1.7 million to settle a consumer fraud lawsuit filed by Massachusetts consumers and the state alleging it used deceptive marketing tactics to sell cancer and surgical insurance to more than 1,000 military veterans in the state.

The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office alleges that the insurer misrepresented its insurance products as a government benefit for veterans, made false claims about rates, illegally denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions, and misrepresented coverage limits, according to the Boston Globe.

The insurer must pay a minimum of $650,000 to reimburse veterans and pay more than $1 million to the state to for civil penalties, the cost of investigation, as well as to promote programs to help veterans.
