CT Nursing Home Subject of Abuse Claims
The Connecticut Department of Public Health is investigating an instance of nursing home abuse at the Ludlowe Health Care Center following the arrest of a former employee on abuse charges.
Tina J. Blake, a 26-year-old who used to be employed at the center, was recently arrested and charged with cruelty to persons, first-degree reckless endangerment, and third-degree assault on a victim over 60 after she allegedly assaulted an 84-year-old male resident at the center. Blake allegedly fractured the face of the resident and broke his finger after becoming frustrated that she had to clean him up after he accidentally went to the bathroom on himself.
According to the Connecticut Post, the arrest warrant claims that the patient’s injuries were potentially life-threatening because he was using blood-thinner medication at the time. He eventually required plastic surgery. Blake is quoted as saying she was aware that she had injured the patient, and knew he would not report it because he suffers from dementia.
This is only the latest issue for the health care center, which was cited in 2012 for a number of public health violations, and in 2011 for failure to ensure proper handling during care and transfers to prevent injury of residents.
