Dangerous Trial in Fetal Engineering?

A new report reveals the details of a troubling off-label medical intervention used in the U.S. to alter the development of unborn children for sex normalization purposes.

The pregnant women targeted are at risk for having a child born with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), an endocrinological condition that may result in female fetuses being born with intersex or more male-typical genitals and brains, according to a Northwestern University press release.

Some of these women are given a synthetic steroid called dexamethasone “off label” starting as early as week five of the first trimester in an attempt to “normalize” the development of the fetus. However, the drug must be given before it is known whether the fetus is female or affected by CAH.

The report provides evidence that mothers offered the intervention have been told it is safe but there has not actually been scientific evidence to back up that claim, according to the press release.
