Dangers of Yaz and Yasmin

Bloomberg.com is reporting that certain birth control pills have caused a number of severe health problems in the women who use them, primarily linked to a synthetic hormone contained in the pills.

According to Bloomerg.com, Bayer’s Yasmin and Yaz contraceptives have been tied to at least fifty deaths by the FDA, who studied over 800,000 women taking the drug. Thousands of other women have experienced blood clots, which have led to heart attacks and strokes. The FDA has linked these clots to drospirenone, a synthetic hormone, and have ordered Bayer to put warning labels on their product to indicate that the pills can triple the risk for clots.

Several lawsuits filed against the company have alleged that Bayer marketed the contraceptives for uses not approved by the FDA, and that Bayer misled women about the potential risks of taking their product. In addition, many women have claimed that the contraceptives damaged their gallbladders or caused gallstones.

Bayer has already paid hundreds of millions of dollars to settle claims against Yasmin, and they have set aside millions more to settle claims against Yaz. Drug-industry analysts are projecting that Bayer may pay several billion dollars to settle all cases over the pills.
