The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment issued a warning to the public that a Colorado dentist reused needles and syringes in his practice, possibly exposing thousands of patients to hepatitis and HIV infection.

The department sent letters to 8,000 patients of dentist Stephen Stein, urging them to seek tests for the diseases after it learned of “unsafe injection practices” at two Denver-area clinics he owned between September 1999 and June 2011, according to NBC News.

Investigators found that Stein reused syringes and needles in several patients’ intravenous lines at his clinics, which are actions that violate the medical protocol standards, said the department.
