The Department of Transportation has announced the first set of rules to preventdistracted driving that would eliminate doing many functions on portable devices for drivers while the car is moving.

According to USA Today, the new rules prohibit drivers from browsing the internet, sending text messages, checking their social network accounts, input addresses into GPS units, call a phone number, or see more than 30 characters of any incoming message unless their vehicle is stopped and out of gear. Drivers would also be limited to two-second glances and one-hand operations for functions involving various tasks if the car is moving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes that distracted driving caused the death of 3,000 people in 2010. The agency seeks to reduce the task length and complexity of a device and limit unnecessary visual information in the view of the driver.

If you or a loved one has been harmed by distracted driving, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact Sokolove Law for a free legal consultation and to learn about your options.
