Doctor Sues his Physicians for Causing Blindness

A Massachusetts doctor is suing his personal physicians alleging that their medical misdiagnosis resulted in his blindness.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that Frederick H. Levine filed a civil lawsuit against an oncologist Dr. Deborah E. Smith of Internal Medicine Associates and radiologist Dr. Linda Bornstein of the Radiation Oncology Group of Western Massachusetts.

The suit claims Dr. Smith did not adequately assess, diagnose, or treat a lesion on Levine’s lower back even after repeated reminders by him.

Levine’s complaint says he was also receiving radiation therapy from Dr. Bornstein for multiple myeloma—a bone marrow cancer. Levine alleges that Dr. Bornstein also failed to diagnose and treat his lesion, despite giving him a physical examination.

Levine was later diagnosed with bilateral retinal artery occlusions. A follow-up exam concluded that the lesion was caused by herpes virus and the delay in diagnosis and treatment resulted in Levine’s blindness, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
