Documentary Warns of Brachial Plexus Birth Injury Risk

A series of videos documenting the dangers of brachial plexus injuries are attempting to shine a light on the mistakes some doctors make that can lead to the debilitating birth injury.

Called “Newborn Birth Injuries: The Untold Story,” the documentary film bills itself as an attempt at “preventing the tragedy of unnecessary birth trauma” by speaking to experts and doctors about what can be done to prevent brachial plexus injuries. It has been airing as a filler piece on PBS stations across the country.

Furthermore, a companion documentary has also been released by the United Brachial Plexus Network, Inc. that further details the mistakes that doctors can make during child birth that can result in a brachial plexus birth injury.

Brachial plexus injuries are often caused by doctors who mistakenly pull or twist the head of a child when its shoulders become stuck behind the mother’s pelvic bone during the birthing process. By pulling or twisting the head, the brachial plexus nerves can become stretched or torn out of the spinal cord and potentially result in paralysis or pain in the child’s hand and arms.

“You would stop every brachial plexus injury, if doctors stop pulling heads,” said Dr. George Malcom Morley, a Board-Certified obstetrician.
