Drugs for Kids Often Go Untested

According to a recent report in the Pediatrics journal, four out of every five children hospitalized in the U.S. are given medications that have never been tested in them.

Most of the drugs used on children are approved by the Food and Drug Administration for adults and about 33 percent of kids take these types of medications, according to CNN. It is legal for doctors to prescribe such drugs, but there is a degree of guessing that goes into determining the appropriate dosage because children metabolize medications differently compared to adults.

One of the reasons drug companies do not conduct tests on children is because it is not cost effective, suggests an analysis by the European Molecular Biology Organization.
