Facebook Inc. agreed to give $10 million to charity to settle a consumer fraud lawsuit that alleges the company violated the rights of its members to use their own photographs, names, and likeness.

The complaint was initiated by five Facebook users who claim the website violated California law by publicizing users’ “likes” of certain advertisers on its “Sponsored Stories” feature without providing them with compensation or letting them opt out, according to Reuters.

A “Sponsored Story” shows up on a Facebook user’s page when a friend “likes” an advertiser and shows the friend’s profile picture and name.
