Falsely Labeled Nail Polishes Face Stronger Penalties

Nail polish products that market themselves as being “non-toxic” but contain dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde could be heavily fined by the state of California.

State Senator Leland Yee is leading a bill that focuses on the misbranding of cosmetics by manufacturers. The bill would double the fine for misbranding cosmetics from $3,800 to $7,600.

According to CBS News, a recent state report found that some brands of nail polish advertise themselves as “non-toxic,” but actually contain a number of toxic chemicals, some of which have been linked to birth defects. These products were being used at many of California’s 48,000 nail salons and could have exposed dangerous chemicals to thousands of unknowing customers and workers.

The bill has already been approved by the state senate 35-0.
