Family Caregivers Face Discrimination, Says AARP

As if family caregivers didn’t have enough to worry about, they now face the prospect of a rising tide of workplace discrimination, according to a new report.

The recently released report from AARP indicates that more employees have personal responsibilities such as caring for elders and highlights the growing trend of “family responsibilities discrimination” or FRD.

The discrimination faced by caregivers can take various forms such as denial of leave requests or termination when an employee asks to take a leave to care for an elderly relative, according to the report. At present, there are no federal laws that explicitly deal with this issue and state level protection is severely limited and covers only a few localities.
