FDA Warns of Listeria Tainted Cantaloupes

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat whole cantaloupes from Burch Equipment LLC. because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (L. mono).

Cantaloupes from Burch Equipment tested positive for Listeria as a part of sampling conducted through the USDA Microbiological Data Program, according to the FDA. Listeria can cause Listeriosis, a food-borne disease typically characterized by fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems. The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant woman, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems.

The company shipped 580 cases of whole cantaloupes on July 15, which were then distributed to retail stores in New York and Maine. It issued a recall for the cantaloupes on July 28, 2012.

Consumers who may have cantaloupes with a red label displaying the words, "Burch Farms," and referencing PLU #4319 should discard them.
