Finland Latest to Ban Products with DMAA

Finland is now the latest country to recall all products containing 1, 3-Dimethylamylamine (DMAA).

The Finish food safety authority (Evira) was alerted by the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed that a dietary supplement containing DMAA was imported into the country, according to a press release by the agency.

One of the main DMAA-containing products imported to Finland is Jack3D, which is targeted at bodybuilders. Evira says the importing companies have withdrawn the dietary supplement from the country and that it is seeking to have all DMAA-containing products withdrawn from the market.

Finland’s action follows safety reports from the Danish and Swedish food safety authorities determining that DMAA is not safe for human consumption because of its health risks, according to Nutraingredients.com.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier issued a warning on dietary supplements containing the substance and restricted its use. In April it sent warning letters to 10 companies that make or distribute the products saying DMAA cannot be used as an active ingredient in dietary supplements and warning against marketing products that have not been proven as safe.

DMAA is a central nervous system stimulant linked to dangerous side effects including:

  • Sudden death
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Kidney damage and kidney failure
  • Liver damage and liver failure

Other potential side effects of this dangerous drug include increased heart rate and blood pressure, heart failure, shortness of breath, seizures, loss of consciousness, muscle breakdown (rhabdo), headache, nausea, DMAA addiction and psychiatric disorders.
