Fire Risk from Eco-Friendly Refrigerant in Cars

With a new generation of eco-friendly cars on the rise, some experts wonder if it is the start to a whole new world of automotive problems.

Fox News reported that a recent finding that the air conditioning refrigerant R-1234yf poses a potential threat of fire prompted Mercedes-Benz to recall its latest SL sports car this week.

During the safety tests conducted on the car, the company found that the refrigerant could catch fire if the lines transmitting it burst in a serious accident, resulting in the leakage of refrigerant to the engine compartment, according to Fox News.

However, this version of the SL sports car has not been introduced in the American markets yet.

In the United States, refrigerant R-1234yf is being used only by Cadillac in its new ATS and XTS sedans, but other automobile companies plan to use this refrigerant soon, reported Fox News.

There have been no reports of any incident involving the refrigerant so far.
