Florida Man Sues Hospital After Surgical Fire

A Florida man has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against an area hospital after he caught on fire during a pacemaker surgery there.

Frank Komorowski was having surgery to implant a pacemaker at NCH Downtown Naples Hospital on March 19, 2008. He awoke to find himself covered in second-degree burns all over his chest, shoulder, and neck, according to Naples News.

His case is among 650 incidents that happen each year involving surgical fires, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These types of fires are rare but can cause severe burns and death. The FDA recently conducted a webinar to help prevent surgical fires, which it calls a “persistent problem,” writes the News. The agency says that if a surgical staff works together these fires are avoidable.
