Florida Museum Dealing with Asbestos Problem

A museum in West Florida that has been open for more than 25 years is on track to replace its shoddy roofing that, in addition to leaking regularly during rainstorms, also contains asbestos.

The Mulberry Phosphate Museum, which opened in the town of Mulberry, FL in 1986, was mentioned in the city’s preliminary 2012-2013 budget as part of a plan to allocate $236,000 to replace the roofs on five city buildings. However, The Ledger reports that the museum presents a potential problem in that its roof may contain asbestos and therefore need to be handled extra carefully.

"We have to look at the roof for asbestos abatement," said Interim City Manager Victor Harris.

If asbestos is found, replacing the roof could raise the cost of the roof higher than the initial $42,500 allotted for it.

The Mulberry Phosphate Museum consists of a number of galleries illustrating the modern phosphate industry, where phosphate is found, and how it is mined and processed.
