Florida School to be Demolished Contains Asbestos

Asbestos has been found in yet another school, this one being a high school in Bradenton, FL at a school that is slated to be demolished.

School officials at Manatee High School recently announced that a track-and-field storage building located on school grounds contains asbestos products in its interior walls. The building is thought to be at least 40-years-old, meaning that it was built during a time when asbestos products were still predominantly used in most construction projects.

"As long as it's in a contained state, as long as it's not disturbed, it is not a problem," said Todd Henson, the district director of maintenance and operations, according to the Herald Tribune. Officials echoed that the building posed no risk to students.

Removing the asbestos properly before the building is demolished is essential to ensure that no hazardous asbestos exposure occurs. The school district is planning a $3,000 asbestos abatement project to remove all the asbestos before the school’s demolition takes place.
